Etiquette

 

At the start and end of the class, we perform a kneeling bow as a sign of respect to each other and your instructor(s).

 

At the end of the class, after the second sitting bow is polite for all students to learn and say the following:

 

Arigato gozai machita Sensei.

 

This means - "Thank you very much Teacher" (note that the Japanese spelling above is incorrect and is aimed at helping to pronounce the words.

 

General

  • Kyu - junior grade (white to brown belt)

  • Dan - senior grade (black belt)

  • Hidari - left

  • Migi - right

  • Gedan - low level

  • Chudan - middle level

  • Jodan - face level

  • Kumite - sparring

  • Makiwara waza - performing techniques against an impact pad

  • Jiyu kumite - freestyle sparring

  • Shiai kumite - competition rules sparring

 

Techniques and Stances

  • Dachi - stance

  • Geri - kick

  • Uchi - block

  • Zuki - punch

  • Gyaku - reverse
